Diana’s silver card case makes nearly £16,000 at US auction

An engraved sterling silver card case owned by Diana, Princess of Wales, has sold at auction for nearly £16,000.

The ornately crafted piece, a present from her grandmother, fetched the highest price of 79 items linked to the late royal in a mass sale conducted by Boston-based RR Auction.

The intimate effects were donated to charity months before her death in 1997, with a letter reading: “The personal quality of some of these items will hopefully show just how important the work of this humanitarian charity is to me.”

Diana’s handwritten French vocabulary book from her time at a Swiss finishing school sold for more than £11,000 while a a 17-inch (43-centimetre) silver necklace with a capital “D” charm that Diana is thought to have worn as a teenager sold for nearly £7,000.

Other items included a white sweater from her teenage years, a silver locket containing a picture of Diana with Prince Harry and Prince William, and a signed Red Cross photograph.

“What makes these items incredibly special is the strong sentimental value they offer, many coming directly from Princess Diana,” said Bobby Livingston, executive VP at RR Auction.
