Battery Plant on Fire in Northern Greece, Villages Evacuated

 

A huge fire that broke out on Tuesday in the Sunlight battery plant in Olvio, Xanthi, forced authorities to evacuate the surrounding communities, due to toxic fumes.

The fire which broke out at 1:00pm, had firefighters struggling to extinguish the toxic blaze in order to contain the dangerous fumes that clouded the area.

The main building of the premises; where the fire began, contained acids, plastic and other flammable materials, which released thick clouds of dangerous fumes.

The communities of Olvio, Agios Athanasios, Thalassia, Cosmiti, Tympano, Toxotes as well as in the recreation area of Nestos River have been evacuated.
