When you’re feeling stressed or a little glum, it’s usual to want to reach for your favourite foods. These comforting treats can act as great pick-me-ups, to boost our moods.
A recent poll of 2,000 adults, commissioned by egg firm Clarence Court, revealed which foods Brits turn to most to feel better.
Among the top picks were fish and chips, a full English breakfast and roast dinner. But the winner was not a traditional British food but pizza.
The research found that 80% of Brits resort to eating their favourite meals when they need some comfort. It also turns out that we are a nation of egg lovers, with scrambled, poached, fried or mayonnaise varieties, all in the top 20 comfort foods.
On average, the participants said the main reason for eating this type of food is stress, with 44% of people saying they feel more anxious now than they did five years ago. And two-thirds choose something that reminds them of their childhood.
“Simple meals which transport us back to childhood can really cheer us up, and help remind us of less complicated times,” psychotherapist Christine Webber told Metro.
“We are leading increasingly stressful lives, so it’s vital for us to access some comfort when we need it – and what better way to find it than by cooking and eating something simple that mum used to make.”
