The nation’s best used cars revealed

Though new car sales in the UK are plummeting, the used vehicle sector is alive and well – in fact, with more than 6.3 million cars sold so far in 2017, it’s positively booming.

But which used cars are worth spending your hard-earned money on? Motor trade publication Car Dealer Magazine has revealed its top picks at its annual used car awards ceremony.

During the event, hosted by Mike Brewer of TV’s Wheeler Dealers, the publication handed out awards for the best cars in various classes, as well as awarding the best used car buying schemes.

And the overall winner? The car crowned Best Used Car for 2017 was the perennially popular Nissan Qashqai. Steadily occupying a place in the best-sellers charts since it launched, the Qashqai is the perfect all-round family car. It was also named Best Used SUV.

Another best-seller took the gong for Best Used Small Car – the Ford Fiesta, which has clocked up more sales than any other car in the UK during its three-year spell at the top of the sales charts.

Best Used Mid-Size Car was awarded to the Dacia Sandero, helped by its outstanding value for money, while the classy and popular Mercedes C-Class took Best Used Executive Car. Car Dealer’s Best Used Sports Car award went to the Mazda MX-5, now in its fourth generation and as good as ever.

In a first for the publication, Car Dealer this year awarded a prize in the Best Used Electrified Car segment. With the massive uptake in all-electric and hybrid models, this class has real relevance, but it’s perhaps of no surprise that the best-selling hybrid car of all time – the Toyota Prius – took the gong.

Although no BMW models won the individual awards, the brand as a whole was commended with Best Manufacturer Used Car Website, thanks to its easy-to-use interface and transparent display of finance offers.

Kia took home the Best Manufacturer Used Car Scheme, thanks to “an unrivalled warranty as well as the first year’s MOT covered, 12 months’ breakdown cover and an 88-point vehicle inspection.” No other brand offers such a comprehensive package.

Awards host Mike Brewer said: “Buying a used car can be a daunting and confusing process as there’s so much choice out there.

“These awards, though, will be a big help to consumers looking for their next car, as our panel of experts have crunched all the data to find best buys you just can’t go wrong with.”
