Sterling and City ‘poles apart’ over new deal – report

Negotiations between Raheem Sterling and Manchester City have reportedly failed to reach an agreement over a new contract for the England star.

Sterling has two years remaining on his current deal but Sky Sports are reporting that two separate meetings between City and the player’s representatives since the end of the season have left the two parties ‘poles apart’ in their negotiations over wages.

Sterling was said to be hoping to have an agreement secured before the World Cup but the 23-year-old flies to Russia on Tuesday afternoon with no further talks planned.

The former Liverpool winger scored 23 goals for City last season, enjoying the most productive season of his career.

Speaking at the end of the season, City boss Pep Guardiola said his desire was for Sterling to remain at the Etihad Stadium long term.

“We all want him to stay as long as possible,” the manager said.

“The chairman and myself want him to stay a long time.”
