US First Lady Melania Trump appeared to be on a charm offensive in London on Friday morning, wearing a dress by British fashion designer Victoria Beckham.
Melania donned the stripe panelled stretch-knit midi dress, which costs a whopping £1,550, as she visited Royal Hospital Chelsea with Prime Minister Theresa May’s husband Philip.
It was another demonstration of sartorial diplomacy by FLOTUS on her and the President’s four-day visit to the UK – a styling trick often used by the royals.
She arrived in the UK wearing a nude bodycon dress by Roland Mouret (one of Meghan Markle’s favourite designers) and wowed at the black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace in a flowing buttercup yellow J Mendel gown.
Both happen to be French designers and she is yet to wear any homegrown American talent on the trip, something which may not sit well with her home country.
Her predecessor Michelle Obama wore US label J Crew and Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo on her first official visit with then President Barack in 2009.
Then in 2011, she donned a printed dress by American designer Barbara Tfank to meet with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. For the England state dinner at the White House, Michelle chose a teal dress by Marchesa, a New York based brand, but with a British designer.
2015’s visit to London also saw her pay homage to British designers with a Christopher Kane floral dress.
Perhaps Melania has some more styling tricks up her sleeve for the rest of her trip.
