Michelle Obama reveals she had a miscarriage 20 years ago and used IVF to conceive daughters

Michelle Obama has revealed that she suffered a miscarriage 20 years ago which left her feeling “lost and alone.”

The former First Lady, 54, told ABC in an interview that she felt like she had “failed because I didn’t know how common miscarriages were, because we don’t talk about them”.

She said that she and former president Barack Obama used IVF to conceive their two daughters Sasha and Malia, now aged 17 and 20.

Speaking about her miscarriage, she said:” We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken.

“I realised that as I was 34 and 35, we had to do IVF.”

Mrs Obama is preparing for the release of her memoir Becoming, which is released on Tuesday. In the book, she writes openly about everything from growing up in Chicago to confronting racism in public life and becoming the country’s first black first lady.

She also denounces President Trump’s “birther” campaign which questioned her husband’s citizenship, calling it bigoted and dangerous.

The former First Lady also expressed disbelief over how many women would choose a “misogynist” over Clinton in 2016.

She remembers how her body “buzzed with fury” after seeing the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Trump brags about sexually assaulting women.

Last month, she launched a programme to help empower girls worldwide through education.

The Global Girls Alliance aims to support more than 1,500 grassroots organisations combating the challenges girls encounter in their communities.
