Museum of Greek Refugees Project Presented

The presentation of plans for a museum of Greek refugees took place on Wednesday at the Acropolis Museum auditorium and was attended by luminaries from Greek culture, the Church, politics and sports. The museum aims to present the history of the Greek people throughout the ages, in all the various places they have lived around the Mediterranean.

The event was presented by former minister of sports Giorgos Lianis who read letters from honorary committee members Kostas Gavras, Giorgos Dalaras and Lefteris Papadopoulos. The audience was visibly moved by a letter from Honorary President of the organization Mikis Theodorakis which was read by his daughter Margarita.

President of the museum committee Helene Glykatzi-Ahrweiler, a renowned Byzantinologist who is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Greece, said, “We had to wait for a century to do the right thing. A whole century to have a museum for the Refugees of Hellenism, which is a scandal. There is no department in Greek universities that teaches the history of the Refugees of Hellenism, for Romiosini, as happens in other countries.”

The museum for Refugees of Hellenism will be housed at the football arena of AEK Athens FC, which is currently under construction and will be named Hagia Sophia, after the emblematic Byzantine basilica in Istanbul.
