AKEL will state its position in a comprehensive manner on the Anastasiades-Akinci meeting when we will have received an official briefing from President Anastasiades.
We welcome the fact that the meeting took place, which in itself is a positive development. We also welcome the fact that progress has been recorded on some Confidence Building Measures, which we hope will be implemented. Finally, we also consider as positive what the President of the Republic said that he explained his proposal for decentralized federation to Mr. Akinci. We expect to receive a similar explanation at the National Council too.
The efforts for contacts between the two leaders must be continued with possible new meetings so as to achieve a better understanding and above all with the hope of paving the way for what constitutes the very substance, namely reaching a conclusion on the terms of reference and the resumption of negotiations. This must be the goal of these meetings and their success or failure will ultimately be judged on precisely this basis.
