End the unilateral suspension of the operation of the checkpoints and install the necessary control mechanisms
Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, AKEL Parliamentary Spokesperson and Political Bureau member
AKEL calls on the government to substantiate scientifically how its decision to temporarily suspend crossings from some of the check points as the most drastic preventive measure.
– It should explain why out of all the points of entry into the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus the only ones that have been closed concern the checkpoints.
It should subsequently inform, why despite the fact that there is not even a single confirmed case (of the virus) in the occupied territories, the government considered crossings from the checkpoints as the biggest threat.
– Provided that controls are deemed necessary, the government should provide answers as to why it did not timely ensure the installment of control mechanisms at all the checkpoints so that the closure of any crossing points won’t be demanded.
Government officials must explain why they were saying exactly the opposite in previous days, both the Minister of Foreign Minister and DISY President Averof Neofytou, but also the Minister of Health when his representatives were referring to the good cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot side within the framework of the relevant technical committee.
As the matter in reality also has sensitive political implications, which the government should have taken seriously into account before proceeding to take such a measure, we call on it to terminate the unilateral suspension of the operation of the crossing points by immediately installing the necessary control mechanisms at all the checkpoints.
