US-based Greek professors sponsor next-gen scientists

Distinguished Greek professors in the US, all alumni of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), are funding summer research internships for NTUA students at leading US universities.

The initiative, called URIUS (Undergraduate Research Internship in the United States), began with professors Dimitris Kollias and Evangelos Delikouras, in collaboration with NTUA’s Yannis Bourbakis.

Three US-based professors – Dionisios Vlachos and Marianthi Ierapetritou of the University of Delaware, and Matthaios Koffas of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute – hosted five chemical engineering students and personally financed each scholarship, about $8,000.

“The students are selected through a very strict process,” said Bourbakis. “They are the best we have.”

Student Erifyli Christoforidi said, “I had the opportunity to join a lab closely linked to industry and today’s challenges.” Delikouras called URIUS “a relatively crazy idea – undergraduate research in world-class labs – that worked, thanks to amazing colleagues.”
