Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in a phone call Thursday that Ankara remains ready to mediate high-level negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
According to a statement from the Turkish presidency, Erdogan underlined that Turkey will remain engaged in supporting Ukraine’s security, not only during the ongoing conflict but also in the post-war period.
Erdogan has, on several occasions in recent months, advanced the idea of Turkey serving as a mediator in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
A major Russian air attack on Kyiv early Thursday, including a rare strike in the city center that damaged the European Union’s diplomatic offices, killed at least 17 people and wounded 48 more, authorities said.
Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Keith Kellogg, speaking from Kyiv, said that officials are “working very, very hard” on efforts to end the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine, as a lack of progress fuels doubts about whether a peace settlement could be on the horizon.
