GREECE
Anti-drone shield for airports

Greek airports are in need of protection measures against drones of any type, and the state is taking measures in the direction of jamming and averting any unmanned aerial vehicles from approaching air transport facilities.

Jamming entails interference in communication or navigation signals, causing drones to fall or fly off-course. The drone-repelling aspect requires high-precision equipment that will operate with absolute control, so as not to transmit at frequencies affecting air navigation systems and communications.

The state’s Information Society has already formulated the technical specifications and Kathimerini understands the relevant proposal is being prepared so that the tender process can run and the project can proceed to implementation.

Most civilian airports in Greece, several of which also serve military needs, such as Hania airport, already have perimeter systems for the detection and identification of unmanned aircraft. The crucial step, however, is installing neutralization technologies that, once an unknown object is detected in monitored airspace, will assume control of the drone and immobilize it before it acts aggressively.
