Greece eyes Israeli defense systems under EU SAFE funding

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that Greece will submit a proposal for inclusion in the EU’s SAFE program, aiming to secure €1.2 billion in loans for defense modernization.

According to reports, Athens is expected to submit a proposal covering defense programs originally scheduled for implementation after 2030.

These include the acquisition of anti-aircraft and missile artillery systems as part of the “Achilles Shield” initiative to enhance Greek air defense capabilities.

A key system under consideration is the Israeli-made BARAK MX, a medium-range air defense platform already in use by Cyprus.

Moreover, Greece also plans to procure up to 36 PULS (Precise and Universal Launching System) multiple rocket launchers from Israel, with the estimated deal valued at €690 million.

Both the BARAK MX and PULS systems are eligible for funding under the SAFE framework.
