Italy and Turkey assert strategic relations

Days after Chevron and HelleniQ Energy expressed interest in exploration south of Crete and amid tensions over Greece-Cyprus power links, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized respect for Ankara’s sovereign rights and international law in all Mediterranean activities.

Speaking alongside Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Rome, Fidan said the Mediterranean is “key for Europe’s energy security and connectivity,” calling for coordination in maritime jurisdictions. He praised Italy’s “sensitivity” to Turkish concerns and highlighted growing defense ties, citing Baykar’s acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace, cooperation with Leonardo, and progress on Eurofighter procurement.

Italy seeks a strategic partnership with Turkey, with prospects for co-production of unmanned systems. Analysts noted Rome’s stance ignores Athens’ objections and signals closer Turkish-Italian cooperation in Libya.

Fidan also reacted to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ comments on EU defense loans and calls to lift Turkey’s “casus belli,” saying such statements are unnecessary given current stability in the Aegean.

Tajani called Turkey “an important strategic partner.” Ankara hopes for momentum following a planned meeting between Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the long-delayed Turkey-Greece High-Level Cooperation Council.

Meanwhile, Turkish officials expressed satisfaction over the ongoing situation between Nicosia and Athens regarding the power link.
