Regional developments, with a focus on Gaza, were at the center of a call on Wednesday between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the government said.
Mitsotakis welcomed Egypt’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, and the two leaders discussed coordination and cooperation on bilateral and regional issues.
The talks came as reports in the Turkish press suggested Egypt could participate in the Turkish-developed KAAN fighter jet program.
The claims highlight warming ties between Ankara and Cairo, which had been strained since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
Turkish sources, however, said the KAAN program has no domestic engines or mass production, and denied any co-production deal with Egypt.
They stressed that Cairo’s air force favors US and French jets, and a shift toward Turkish aircraft would carry heavy diplomatic costs.
Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Cairo after Israel’s decision to impose full control over Gaza, underscoring shared positions between Ankara and Cairo on regional issues.
Athens, which signed an exclusive economic zone agreement with Cairo seen as a counter to Turkish claims in the Eastern Mediterranean, is closely watching the rapprochement.
Greek officials stress their partnership with Egypt as vital for stability in the region.
