Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna briefed on Friday the Cyprus diaspora, which met in Nicosia, on the upcoming assumption by the Republic of Cyprus of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, the first half of 2026.
The Deputy Minister presented the goals, vision and priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, noting that this is a moment of responsibility, but above all a moment of opportunity for the country.
She underlined that Cyprus will use this unique opportunity to strengthen its geopolitical role, to upgrade its position in the EU and internationally, but also to shed light on the Cyprus problem, as a problem of invasion and occupation of European territory.
Raouna noted that we are assuming the Presidency as an experienced member state, with a strong, resilient economy, a country that deeply believes in further integration.
She said that we want to have a strong diplomatic footprint, as a reliable, stable partner, capable of bringing its strategic allies even closer.
The Deputy Minister also referred to the high demands of assuming the Presidency from an organizational perspective, underlining that in just 181 days, Cyprus will host hundreds of meetings and conferences, with thousands of visitors and hundreds of cultural events both in Cyprus and abroad.
She reiterated that the Cyprus Presidency is a national mission and highlighted the crucial role of the members of the diaspora in successfully conveying the messages of the Cyprus Presidency to their countries of residence.
The Deputy Minister warmly thanked the Cypriots of the diaspora for their timeless contribution, noting that they are the most convincing voice with the strongest presence where they reside.
