An independent radio station in Istanbul has shut down after Turkey’s regulator cancelled its terrestrial broadcasting licence after it failed to comply with a suspension order over comments made by a guest on the genocide of Armenians.
Acknowledgement and vigilance is required for the victims of the Armenian Genocide, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou said in a statement on Wednesday, marking the 109th anniversary since the start of a systematic extermination of one and a half million Armenians during the last period of the Ottoman Empire.
The Armenian Genocide, the systematic mass murder and expulsion of 1.5 million ethnic Armenians carried out in Turkey and adjoining regions by the Ottoman government between 1914 and 1923, is commemorated on April 24th every year.
