Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday resigned as a member of parliament, saying he would continue his political activism outside the formal structures of the legislature.
The left-wing SYRIZA party, whose MP Sokratis Famellos was elected as it new leader Sunday, announced the election’s official final results Monday, giving Famellos 49.36% of the vote.
“Umbrella,” the left-wing faction of the main opposition SYRIZA party, led by former Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos, has officially announced it has quit the party.
Stefanos Kasselakis is the new SYRIZA-PA leader after winning the second round ballot over Efi Achtsioglou on Sunday’s party election. Syriza is the second largest party in the Greek Parliament and its former party chairman, Alexis Tsipras, served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2015 to 2019.
