“The immediate period of time will determine the course of the Cyprus Issue and our increasing concern about the risk of a final partition makes our immediate and dynamic reaction necessary,” states the Declaration on the Cyprus Issue, which was unanimously approved by the 24th AKEL Congress.
At the same time, the Party addresses with its Declaration a call to the forces of the solution and to the two communities to stand firm against any dangerous tactics.
The AKEL Declaration underlines that “the main responsibility for the decades-long failure to resolve the Cyprus problem lies with Turkey, which carried out the illegal invasion in 1974 and continues to maintain wuth occupying troops on the island, blatantly violating the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus”. At the same time, criticizing the policies and actions of N. Anastasiades and N. Christodoulides,
AKEL reiterates that the only way offered to confront the Turkish methods is “our consistent insistence on the agreed basis for a solution and on the preservation of the negotiated acquis in its entirety”. The Party also reiterates its positions and proposals for the actions that, in its opinion, should be taken in the coming period.
The Declaration proclaims that “AKEL, drawing strength from the sovereign people who desire and have the right to prosper in a free homeland, will continue to struggle against the status quo.”
