Residents living in settlements along the banks of the Evros River in northeastern Greece remained on high alert for a third day on Thursday as water levels remained above the 6.4-meter alert threshold threatening residential areas.
Heavy rainfall in the region in recent days has inundated tens of thousands of acres of farmland and swept away embankments.
The areas of Mandra, Lavara, Amorio and Didymoteicho suffered extensive damage, with farmers lamenting their lost crops, as parts of those settlements remained submerged in water.
In the wider area outside Lavara, located on the road linking Didymoteicho and Soufli, the water level reached seven meters, with officials describing the next few hours as particularly critical. Local roads were closed with state bodies focusing on preventing floodwaters from entering the village.
Local officials said they expected flooding to start receding after February 28 as water quantities entering from neighboring Bulgaria decrease, easing pressure on affected infrastructure.
