A day after announcing his departure from SYRIZA, former leader Stefanos Kasselakis unveiled the creation of a new political movement on Saturday.
Speaking to a large, vocal crowd chanting slogans outside his new headquarters in Tavros, southern Athens, Kasselakis declared, “Today is a joyful day because a movement of democracy, free citizens, and progress is being created.”
“We are creating a movement from society, for society,” he continued, offering “good luck” to those remaining in SYRIZA.
Kasselakis refrained from naming his party, suggesting that the name would be determined by popular vote. “You will decide what the movement that will become a party will be called. The party will be yours, and I will be your servant,” he said.
Late on Friday, in response to his exclusion from the upcoming leadership race, Kasselakis had announced his departure from SYRIZA, less than 14 months after being elected party leader. So far, four SYRIZA MPs have left the party, putting its status as the official opposition at risk.
