Piraeus highlighted as strategic hub for Europe

European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas met with the deputy chief executive officer of Piraeus Port Authority (OLP), Panagiotis Tsonis, in the context of the annual conference of the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) held in Thessaloniki.

The meeting focused on the challenges facing ports at the European level, such as the energy transition, dealing with the climate crisis and geopolitical developments.

Particular reference was made to the port of Piraeus, which operates as a strategic hub for international trade and tourism but also as a lever for the development of cruise shipping in Europe.

It was noted that the port of Piraeus is recording a continuous upward trend in all its activity sectors, with particular emphasis on the cruise sector, which is experiencing spectacular growth.

Tsonis stressed that these developments enhance the port’s contribution to the national economy and have a positive impact on the employment sector.
