Greece targeted in three major cyberattacks in 2024

Three of the eight major cyberattacks recorded in the EU in 2024 targeted Greece, according to the annual report of the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), which highlights the vulnerability of key national institutions.

The most serious incident occurred at the National Observatory of Athens, where hackers breached its online booking system in July 2024 and stole visitors’ credit card data. “There was an attempt to steal money from several accounts, but no citizen lost funds,” said Observatory Director Spyros Vasilakos. The agency has since strengthened its security systems.

Other attacks targeted the Hellenic Police – including one leaking emails for sale on the dark web – and the Hellenic Open University, which suffered a 813-gigabyte data breach that disrupted operations.

Across the EU, ENISA logged 586 cyber incidents last year, mostly DDoS, ransomware, and data breaches.
