Athens honors 1973 Polytechnic uprising as security measures heighten

The gates of the Athens Polytechnic University remain open Sunday, with dozens of citizens paying tribute to the students who died during the 1973 uprising against the military junta. Visitors of all ages are leaving flowers at the memorial honoring the victims of the uprising.

The site will be open Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., when commemorations will culminate in a march to the US embassy.

Authorities have imposed traffic restrictions around the Polytechnic from 6 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, including parking bans and changes to bus and trolley routes. Security has been increased with more than 5,000 police officers and aerial surveillance.

Metro stations Omonia, Panepistimio, Syntagma, Evangelismos and Megaro Mousikis will close at 2 p.m. Monday, with trains passing through without stopping.
