The University of Athens Senate has authorized a supplemental exam session through November 25 for students facing expulsion under maximum study duration limits, a decision Education Ministry officials say violates legal guidelines.
The October 29 Senate resolution targets students admitted in 2018-2019 or earlier who haven’t completed four-year programs. Results must be issued by December 1.
Ministry sources told Kathimerini the decision conflicts with laws 4957/2022 and 5224/2025, which mandate automatic expulsion for students admitted in 2016-2017 or earlier who failed to complete studies by September 2025, unless granted extensions.
University administrators plan requesting deadline extensions, citing difficulties accessing paper archives to identify approximately 285,000 students ineligible for extensions. A coalition of university rectors supports the delay.
Ministry leadership opposes any extension, viewing the proposal as a delaying tactic to prevent expulsions, according to sources.
