Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday toured the construction site of Panathinaikos’ new soccer stadium in the Votanikos area of western Athens, calling the project a long-awaited milestone for the historic club.
Mitsotakis was accompanied by Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and Panathinaikos owner and president Yiannis Alafouzos.
“I am very happy to see a stadium that will be a real gem. Panathinaikos deserves it,” said Mitsotakis, a self-described supporter of archrival Olympiakos.
Alafouzos said construction of the 39,074-seat stadium is on schedule, with concrete works expected to be completed by May 2026 and full completion planned for May 2027. He thanked the government, local authorities and other stakeholders for helping realize what he described as a decades-long dream for the club.
Panathinaikos currently plays at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium in the central Ampelokipi neighborhood. The stadium, also known as Leoforos, opened in 1922. Alafouzos said parts of the old grounds could be preserved as a museum and community space for children.
Founded in 1908, Panathinaikos has won 20 Greek league titles and 20 Greek Cup trophies.
