The Cypriot Military Delegation to the European Union organized today a workshop titled “The EU’s Role in Supporting Civilian Evacuation Efforts Across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region.”
Held within the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, the workshop brought together political and military representatives to exchange experiences and best practices in crisis management and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO). According to a press release by the Ministry of Defence, discussions focused on enhancing the EU’s capacity for timely and coordinated operations, delivering humanitarian assistance, and ensuring political-military coordination across the Middle East and North Africa.
At the opening of the workshop, Cyprus’ Military Representative to the EU Military Committee, Colonel Konstantinos G. Konstantinou, emphasized the importance of cooperation between member states and EU mechanisms to effectively respond to evolving crises and protect civilians.
During the workshop, senior officials from the EU and Member States presented the role of coordination centers, the challenges of multinational operations, and the need for joint exercises and information sharing. Experiences and lessons learned from previous national and EU-level actions were also discussed.
Participants exchanged practices implemented by the Republic of Cyprus in the fields of humanitarian assistance and evacuation operations, and recent EU crisis response activities in the region were highlighted.
The workshop concluded with a discussion on next steps, focusing on maintaining cooperation, supporting future EU initiatives, and strengthening the shared mission and trust among all participants.
