The Athens Epidaurus Festival has announced an expanded program under new artistic director Michail Marmarinos, whose three-year tenure aims to balance ancient drama with experimental forms, international collaboration and broader public access.
Ancient tragedy remains the festival’s “reservoir of ideas, moral and social values,” Marmarinos said, while new thematic strands extend performances beyond the theater into Epidaurus’ archaeological site and Asklepieion.
The Little Epidaurus Theater will operate as an autonomous festival featuring Greek and international artists, including Euripides Laskaridis and Ivan Vyrypaev.
At Pireos 260, marking 20 years of continuous operation, the festival will honor former director Giorgos Loukos with screenings and installations celebrating his legacy.
The program also highlights creators from Palestine, Lebanon, Algeria and Iran, alongside dance, contemporary music and interdisciplinary works exploring memory, language, technology and collective experience.
A new partnership among major cultural institutions, titled SYSTEMA, seeks a collaborative model for Greece’s performing arts going forward.
