Adelaide and Athens formalize sister city partnership

The mayors of Adelaide and Athens have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) formalizing a sister city partnership between the two capitals, The Greek Herald reported.

The agreement was signed on the eve of the C40 World Mayors Summit in Rio de Janeiro by Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, strengthening cooperation in areas such as culture, tourism, innovation, commerce and environmental sustainability.

“This MoU, approved by Council this year, will deepen cooperation between Adelaide and Athens in culture, tourism, innovation and sustainable urban living,” Lomax-Smith said in a social media post.

Adelaide City Councillor Mary Couros, who has supported the initiative since the start of the current council term, said the partnership reflects the city’s multicultural character. “As a Greek Australian, I’m honored to see the spirit of partnership and cultural exchange reflected in this important milestone,” she said.

Greece’s consul general in Adelaide, Dr Alexandra Theodoropoulou, described the MoU as “promising,” saying it would “make both cities better” through collaboration in culture, education, innovation and diplomacy.
