As Turkey continues to push for the recognition of its illegal occupation through more and more aggression, we want to ensure that MPs are speaking up for the consistent enforcement of international law and opposing recognition attempts.
On 15th November 1983, the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus unilaterally declared independence, however this was not recognized by any country. Successive UK Governments and the UN Security Council have remained steadfast in their non-recognition of the occupation regime.
Unfortunately, there have been repeated attempts by Turkey and the occupation regime in the north of island to try to upgrade the status of the regime. In the last month alone, we have seen:
• Turkish President Erdogan calling on the international community to recognise the occupation regime at the UN General Assembly
• President Erdogan pledging to reinforce Turkey’s military presence in the occupied area, with media reports claiming an illegal military base will be built in Karpasia
• President Erdogan pushing for ‘official visits’ by Turkish Cypriot Leader to Azerbaijan and Pakistan
• Stalling the establishment of a large photovoltaic park in the buffer-zone, as the Turkish Cypriot Leader wants an agreement between states, before proceeding
• Attempts to open offices for the so-called occupation regime in a number of countries
• Reports alleging that the Turkish Cypriot leader has given the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus an ultimatum to recognise the regime or to leave in one month
• Celebrations on the “anniversary” of the illegal opening of Varosi beachfront in violation of UN Security Council Resolutions
Turkey’s repeated calls for recognition of the occupied northern part of Cyprus run contrary to the UK’s Treaty Obligations to Cyprus and UN Security Council Resolutions. Whether in Cyprus or Ukraine, the implementation of international law is universal. Given the UK’s strong bilateral relationship with Turkey and Treaty obligations to Cyprus, the UK can play a pivotal role in getting Turkey back to the negotiating table to discuss a solution that is within the agreed UN framework.
We need your help to ensure that MPs are calling for the consistent enforcement of international law.
Your local Member of Parliament has a duty to represent you and we want to make sure that they hear from you about our upcoming event in Parliament!
On November 15th we are hosting a Cyprus Information Day in Parliament. The day will be an opportunity for us to discuss the Cyprus Issue directly with Parliamentarians on the anniversary of the illegally occupied part of Cyprus’ Universal Declaration of Independence in 1983. If your MP is already active on Cyprus, engaging with them is also a chance to thank them for their support.
