Australian Hellenic Choir to hold benefit concert for Sydney University’s Modern Greek Department

The Australian Hellenic Choir Inc. (AHC), in conjunction with the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies of the University of Sydney (USYD), will hold a benefit concert in the Great Hall at USYD on Sunday, June 26 at 5pm.

The Concert is being held to raise much needed funds to ensure the Department continues to deliver Greek literature and language classes.

The Sir Nicholas Laurantus Chair in Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at USYD, Professor Vrasidas Karalis, will be hosting the concert.

“In the past 30 years, thousands of students have passed through the doors of this department with a passion to learn Greek literature, cinema, art, politics and the language,” Professor Karalis said.

The Founder and President of the AHC, James Tsolakis, said they are “extremely excited about being able to assist the University of Sydney Department of Modern Greek.”

“The Australian Hellenic Choir is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual group formed to bring the best music of the world to Australian and Greek audiences,” Mr Tsolakis added.

“Our vision is to support performers and events and to perform in our own right and to bring people
together in song.”

The Programme, entitled ‘100 Years of Greek Song,’ will deliver some of the most beautiful and powerful songs from Greece’s famous composers and poets, to the songs of Asia Minor.

“The songs have been arranged for this concert by the Choir’s Music Director, Leon Vitogiannis,” Mr Tsolakis said.

Leon Vitogiannis will be conducting the concert.

“Since Mr Vitogiannis joined the Choir as Music Director 18 months ago, he has delivered a number of outstanding performances.”

The Concert will highlight a never-performed instrumental piece written for this event by the Choir’s Pianist, Stefanos Maragkakis.

All net proceeds from this event will be donated to the Department of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Tickets are $80 per person with $60 concession tickets available. Tickets for the event are available via the Choir Facebook Page, Eventbrite or scanning the QR code below.
