A week of Greek music, food, dance, film and sport will take place in Canberra, Australia’s capital, from October 26 to November 1, with events at the Hellenic Club Canberra, Palace Electric Cinema and Deakin Stadium.
The program will open with a performance by the Canberra Hellenic Dancers on October 26, followed by live Greek music, culinary events and an exhibition featuring Greek Australian artists.
On October 28, Greece’s “Ohi Day,” members of the country’s Presidential Guard, the Evzones, will march into the Hellenic Club in what organizers describe as their first official visit to Australia’s capital. The national holiday commemorates Greece’s rejection of an ultimatum by Fascist Italy on October 28, 1940, which led to the country’s entry into World War II. A dinner with the guards will follow.
The week will also feature the Greek Film Festival, a soccer match between South Melbourne FC and Canberra Croatia, and a taverna night with live music and dancing.
The program will conclude on November 1 with a screening of “Saint Paisios,” directed by Stamos Tsiamis, at Palace Electric Cinema, celebrating Greek culture and community in Canberra.
