Coast guard authorities carried out another large-scale migrant rescue early Saturday south of Crete. A vessel carrying 131 migrants was spotted in waters off the island of Gavdos, prompting the immediate deployment of coast guard boats to the scene.
The migrants were rescued and transported in the early morning hours to Gavdos, from where they were expected to be transferred to Crete.
Authorities noted that just a day earlier more than 500 people were moved to a makeshift facility in Agia, Iraklio.
With Saturday’s rescue, the facility is again becoming crowded with gathered migrants, underscoring continued pressure from arrivals in the area.
