Cyprus honored the millions of people who perished during the two World Wars at a memorial ceremony held on Monday in Nicosia, at the monument to the Cypriot fallen of the World War II. Defence Minister, Vassilis Palmas, political party representatives, and ambassadors, among others, attended the event for this year’s Remembrance Day.
Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos, said that the memory of the victims is a remembrance to continue the debate about the value of peace.
He said that today we honor, not only the people who lost their lives in the wars, but also those who fought for a better world, adding that their sacrifices remind us of the need to preserve the principles of peaceful coexistence, cooperation and respect.
Chief National Guard, Lieutenant General Georgios Tsitsikostas said that Cyprus was present in the two World Wars, on the right side of history. He noted that by today’s standards their participation and contribution was huge.
