AKEL on the acceptance of the pseudo-state as an observer in the Organisation of Turkic States.

11 November 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The announcement of the acceptance of the pseudo-state [in the occupied area] into the Organisation of Turkic States with an observer status is, if confirmed, a very negative development. All that those who take such provocative and contrary to international law achieve is to encourage Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership that the goal of a two states solution on the island is achievable.

Undoubtedly, this move should ring a dangerous alarm bell, but at the same time it does not in itself constitute recognition of the pseudo-state. Such actions push our fellow Turkish Cypriots even further into dependence on Turkey, with the result that their communal existence is threatened.

AKEL calls on the government to make all the necessary representations to the international community and towards the states that consented to this development. At the same time, the restoration of the Greek Cypriot community’s credibility remains an issue. Unless the erroneous and damaging policies pursued by President Anastasiades, which are supported by the two DISY candidates [Averof Neofytou and Nikos Christodoulides], are not abandoned, the fait accompli being attempted by Ankara, taking advantage of the ongoing deadlock [on the Cyprus problem], will continue and intensify.
