Data centers set to devour more energy

Data centers are power guzzlers, especially if they are used to train, deploy and deliver AI applications and services: A 100 MW AI data center uses enough energy annually to power 100,000 households.

There are plans to build centers 20 times as big. By 2030, data centers will require more energy than Japan consumes annually (945 terawatt-hours).

To meet demand, the EU will rely mostly on renewables, nuclear energy and some natural gas. The US will equally use gas and renewables, while China will use as much coal as renewables (40% each).
