Drug cartels expose gaps in Piraeus port security

Drug trafficking investigations at Piraeus Port have exposed major security gaps, including blind spots in security camera coverage. The investigation, triggered by the 1.2 kg cocaine seizure inside a refrigeration system in late 2023, revealed that cameras in critical areas in the container terminal were not functional, leaving those areas unmonitored.

The shipment, originating from Ecuador and marked with bananas, arrived in September 2023. Upon inspection, authorities found that most of the cocaine had been removed, leaving 1.2 kg behind.

The discovery came after analysis of surveillance footage showed gaps in security camera placement at key inspection points. This revelation follows earlier cases, such as the discovery of 83 kg of cannabis hidden in furniture, and highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in security protocols, with missteps continuing in the handling and inspection of containers.
