A Doxology service will be held in Sydney on Thursday, October 29, to commemorate the anniversary of OXI Day, marking Greece’s historic rejection of Italy’s ultimatum on October 28, 1940.
The service will begin at 11.30am at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Redfern, Sydney, presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
A detachment of Greece’s Presidential Guard, known as the Evzones, will attend alongside Greek consular representatives, war veterans, presidents of Greek associations and members of the Greek Australian community.

A wreath-laying ceremony will follow at 11.45am at the cenotaph in the cathedral courtyard, paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War.
The commemorations will conclude with a reception at noon for dignitaries and members of the community.
OXI Day is observed annually on October 28, commemorating Greece’s refusal to accept the ultimatum issued by Fascist Italy in 1940, a decision that led to the country’s entry into the Second World War.
The Sydney service forms part of a broader program of OXI Day commemorations across Australia during the Evzones’ visit this month.
