The latest poll conducted by Ipsos shows a new balance of power between the centre-right parties in Italy’s coalition government as centre-right Forza Italia (EPP) has managed to overtake far-right Lega (ID) in the third position.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia (ECR) still ranks first with 27.5%, growing 0.5% higher than the 26% obtained in the last political elections. Meloni’s approval rating remains high at 47% but is down from last year’s 51% when she won the general election.

Second is Elly Schlein’s Democratic Party (PD/S&D), estimated at 20.5%, followed by the 5-Star Movement of former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte with 16.1%.

In the centre-right, on the other hand, the overtaking of Forza Italia (FI/EPP) of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani over Matteo Salvini’s Lega (ID) has been consolidated: Forza Italia stands at 8.7% while Lega remains at 8%.

According to the poll published in Corriere della Sella, Alleanza Verdi Sinistra and Italia Viva (Renew) of Matteo Renzi have 3.3% each, followed by Più Europa with 2.8% and Azione (Renew) with 2.5%.

Abstentionism, however, is growing: 52.5% of Italians are inclined not to vote or are uncertain. If confirmed, it is 4% higher than the abstention recorded in the last European elections in 2019.

The European elections will take place on 8 and 9 June, and there is a 4% threshold for representation in the European Parliament.
