More than 150 delegates from across the globe will converge on Chania this week for the 7th World Convention of Cretans, a four-day gathering aimed at shaping the future of Crete through dialogue, collaboration and the exchange of ideas between the homeland and its global diaspora.

Organised by the World Council of Cretans, the convention will be held at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Kolymbari from July 23 to 26, under the theme “Crete and the Cretans of Today and Tomorrow.”

The event will feature 24 thematic panels, 65 speakers and eight keynote addresses, bringing together academics, scientists, business leaders, government representatives, local authorities and members of the Cretan diaspora to discuss practical solutions for the island’s future.

The programme is structured around four key themes: Diaspora, Economy and Development; Climate Crisis and the Environment; Education and Culture; and Inclusion, Social Responsibility and Volunteerism.

Topics to be explored include olive oil and wine production, exports, innovation, sustainable tourism, climate resilience, water management, education, cultural heritage, health, volunteering and emergency response.

The convention will also feature keynote addresses from prominent political, academic and community leaders, including Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum Sevi Voloudaki, Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki, former minister Anna Diamantopoulou, former Climate Crisis Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis, Region of Crete Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis, World Council of Cretans President Nikos Kastrinakis, Hellenic Red Cross President Dr Antonis Avgerinos, The Smile of the Child President Kostas Giannopoulos, and Professor Nikos Christodoulakis.

The keynote presentations will examine the role of the Cretan diaspora in Greece’s development, education, climate resilience, volunteering, regional growth and the future direction of Crete.

Pre-convention celebrations begin on Tuesday, July 21, with the official raising of the World Council of Cretans’ flags at the historic Firka Fortress, symbolising the unity of Cretans worldwide. The ceremony will be followed by a traditional “Strata” parade through Chania’s Venetian Harbour, featuring cultural associations, dance groups and diaspora delegations.

Alongside the main programme, young members of the diaspora will participate in workshops, networking opportunities and educational activities designed to strengthen their connection with Crete’s history, culture and future opportunities.

All convention sessions will be open to the public free of charge, allowing residents of Crete to engage directly with discussions on the island’s future.

Organisers say the convention aims to transform the experience, expertise and international perspectives of the global Cretan community into practical proposals that will contribute to the island’s long-term development and prosperity.
