Greece wants to participate in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has told his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, at a meeting on Thursday on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

Mitsotakis said Greece can serve as India’s gateway to Europe due to its geographic position and infrastructure.

According to a government announcement, the two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of ties and confirmed their excellent level of cooperation, two years after Mitsotakis’ official visit to India and two and a half years after Modi’s visit to Athens, which marked the upgrade of relations to a strategic partnership.

The government announcement said the leaders expressed their mutual will to use this momentum to further deepen cooperation, particularly in defense, shipping, shipbuilding and ship repair as well as infrastructure.

Mitsotakis congratulated Modi on the EU-India trade agreement and described it as a unique opportunity to strengthen EU-India economic and geopolitical ties in an uncertain international environment.

The leaders also discussed the latest developments in Ukraine and exchanged views on the evolution of artificial intelligence. Mitsotakis said Greece and India have much to contribute to this discussion.

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is a proposed multinational connectivity initiative designed to link India with Europe via the Middle East through an integrated network of railways, ports, shipping routes, energy pipelines and digital infrastructure.
