Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis on Wednesday confirmed the government’s intention to proceed to the next step – after the measures announced on Tuesday – in the context of the Thessaloniki International Fair, focusing on “tax cuts for the middle incomes and consistent taxpayers.”
As Hatzidakis said in interviews on Skai TV and Radio, “in September, interventions will be announced to reduce taxation mainly for middle incomes and consistent taxpayers. The announcements made are mainly aimed at alleviating the housing problem and poverty in specific population groups, such as pensioners and the disabled. We must look at the whole of society and, based on the course of the economy and the arrest of tax evasion, proceed with further tax relief.”
Additional budgetary space for the TIF measures is estimated to be secured, according to information, not only from the further reduction of tax evasion, but also from the implementation of the escape clause for defense spending at the European Union level. Overall, the savings could reach 1-1.5 billion euros, according to some initial estimates by government officials, although final decisions have not yet been taken at the EU level on how to implement the escape clause.
