Greek authorities are investigating why Igoumenitsa has emerged as an entry point for large shipments of Spanish hydroponic cannabis, known as skunk.

On July 28, a trained coast guard dog found 92.5 kilograms hidden in sealed packages inside boxes marked “fragile” on a truck arriving from Italy. The network’s expected profit exceeded €2 million.

Since last November, authorities have seized more than one ton of skunk in the port. Earlier cases involved 507 kilograms, 112 kilograms and 353 kilograms. In all three shipments, the drugs were loaded in Spain and the truck drivers were Bulgarian.

Drug investigators believe much of the seized cannabis may have been destined for Turkey. They also cite Spain’s significant cannabis production and increased inspections at Piraeus and Thessaloniki ports, which may be diverting traffickers toward Patra and Igoumenitsa.
