The inauguration of the “Resistance and Democracy” Park took place on Saturday 9 December. The ceremony took place following a proposal submitted by AKEL to the Municipality of the city of Larnaka. AKEL Larnaka held a tree planting initiative in this particular park in July 2020. The Mayor of Larnaka Andreas Vyra and the Vice-president of the Pancyprian Association of Resistance Fighters, Vladimiros Charalambous addressed the event and inaugurated the park.
Nikos Ioannou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL, addressed the event on behalf of AKEL. In his address, N.Ioannou referred to the need to pay tribute to all those who resisted the fascist coup in defence of Democracy, especially today when attempts are being made to falsify the historical truth, today when DISY and far-right ELAM are laying wreaths to honor the traitors who sought to overthrow democracy with the force of arms and subsequently opened the backdoor to the invading Turkish army.
It was pointed out that the Christodoulides government violated the resolution of the House of Representatives that was tabled by AKEL and approved – with only DISY far-right ELAM voting against – which obliges the state to refrain from holding any events in honor of those who took up arms against legality and the constitutional order.
In his own intervention, Vladimiros Charalambous thanked AKEL and the Municipality of Larnaka in particular for responding positively to AKEL’s request. He spoke of the struggle being waged against the falsification of History, also referring to the struggle for history to be written and taught so that the young generation do not experience the devastation the Cypriot people experienced.
V.Charalambous concluded by paying tribute to the anti-fascist resistance fighters who gave their lives and to the disabled who feel pain to this day from the terrible suffering they experienced in the coup and from the actions of the fascist EOKA B organisation.
