Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a series of measures aimed at tackling violence in universities during his meeting with the heads of public universities.
According to public broadcaster ERT, Mitsotakis said that a deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court will be appointed to oversee universities across Greece and added that rectors who do not meet their responsibilities may face dismissal.
He further noted that, from now on, the perpetrators will be held financially responsible for repairing any damage caused by acts of violence, rather than the universities.
“I want to be clear: there will be consequences, including the removal of rectors who fail to fulfill their responsibilities. It is no longer acceptable for small groups to act as the ‘bullies’ of our universities,” Mitsotakis said.
“I don’t think we can hide behind our fingers anymore. This is a unique opportunity to put a definite end to the phenomena that have plagued public universities throughout the post-dictatorship era,” he added.
