Restoration works at the church of Panayia in Turkish-occupied Lysi have been completed, the Greek Cypriot Co-Chair of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, Sotos Ktoris has said, while referring to “one of the most emblematic monuments of Cyprus’ modern cultural heritage.”

In a post on social media, Ktoris noted that the works are the result of a joint effort of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot architects, engineers and conservators.

The church is the work of the distinguished master builder Giakoumis (Iakovos Pavlos), and was completed at the end of the 19th century, with Ktoris describing it as a masterpiece of Cypriot church-building.

The implementation of the project was made possible thanks to the contribution of the Lysi community, the assistance of the European Union and the technical guidance of the UNDP, he added.

The team of researchers/conservators consisted of Margarita Petrou from Lysi, Enver Eronen, Despina Athanasiou, Ismael Safkan, Katerina Athienitou and Christos Karis. Fatos Mullaaziz supervised the work on behalf of UNDP.
