GREECE
Old naval mine found just off the coast of Crete

A naval mine, apparently dating back to World War II, has been discovered on the seabed off the coast of western Crete, authorities said Friday.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the munition was located Thursday about ten meters offshore at the Koutalas sea cave near the village of Kokkino Horio in the southern island’s Hania area.

It was resting at the bottom of the sea at a depth of about 12-15 meters.

More than 80 years after the end of WWII, ammunition dumped or lost at sea during hostilities in Greece still emerges regularly on beaches and rocky shores in various parts of the country.

The Coast Guard said the Hellenic Navy has been asked to help dispose of the mine.
