The target of starting Greece’s first exploratory drilling operation in nearly half a century in early 2027 remains on track, Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou said.

The announcement followed a meeting on Thursday evening with Dr John Ardill, vice president and head of global exploration at ExxonMobil, who confirmed the timetable.

The drilling is planned for Block 2 in the Ionian Sea, a concession that ExxonMobil entered in November 2025 with a 60% stake. Energean holds a 30% stake, while Helleniq Energy holds the remaining 10%.

Papastavrou stated: “I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr John Ardill, as part of our cooperation on the development of Greece’s hydrocarbons sector. We confirmed that we are proceeding according to plan and that the target of carrying out the first exploratory drilling operation in the first months of 2027, after almost half a century, remains unchanged,” he said.

He added, “consistency in implementing the agreed timelines is critical. Every step completed strengthens the country’s credibility and the confidence of major international energy groups in Greece’s prospects. Greece is demonstrating that it can plan methodically, move quickly and operate reliably, while complying with all international environmental standards. The goals we set are being turned into reality.”
