President discusses energy with Netanyahu, who also expresses support for Cyprus issue

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting on Wednesday in Jerusalem during which they discussed issues related to energy, such as the Eurasia Interconnector and the important development following the EU decision to fund the project.

During the meeting, Netanyahu also expressed his support to the efforts made by the Greek Cypriot side to resume talks for the solution of the Cyprus issue, based on the UN Security Council resolutions.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos, the funding for the Eurasia Interconnector project is the largest ever allocated by the EU for a similar type of project. During the meeting, they discussed ways to speed up the procedures for the implementation of the Israel-Cyprus electricity interconnection.

Furthermore, they discussed about the settlement between the two countries on the Ishai Aphrodite gas field. President Anastasiades informed him about the progress made in the negotiations. Netanyahu agreed on the importance to have progress as soon as possible.

Pelekanos adds that they also discussed about potential synergies in relation to the transfer of natural gas to Cyprus from Israel’s fields and their export to various EU countries, as well as matters related to defence cooperation between the two countries.

In addition, President Anastasiades briefed Netanyahu on the Cyprus issue and the continuous Turkish provocations. Netanyahu conveyed his support to the efforts made by the Greek Cypriot side to resume the dialogue for the solution of the Cyprus issue, based on the UNSC resolutions, the Spokesperson’s written statement concludes.
